SEPTEMBER 13 - DAILY CHRONICLES OF HISTORY

SEPTEMBER 13

1939

German magazine spread propaganda.  On September 13, 1939, the German magazine Die Wehrmacht printed a false report that Polish Cavalrymen had charged against German tanks with sabers and lances.  This was a falsified report.   The battle between the Polish cavalrymen and the German forces took place on September 1, 1939 as part of the larger Battle of Tuchola Forest.  The Polish units, ie the 18th Pomeranian Uhlans spotted a group of German infantry posted idly in a clearing of the Tuchola Forest (near the railroad crossroads of Chojnice – Runowo Pomorskie line). The moment was opportune to take the enemy by surprise, and Colonel Kazimierz Mastalerz gave the order to Eugeniusz Świeściak, commander of the 1st squadron, to execute a cavalry charge. (Other squadrons and their TKS/TK3 tankettes, were held back in reserve.)  At 1900 hours, two Polish squadrons numbering 250 men made a successful charge causing the German infantry unit to disperse. However, German armored reconnaissance vehicles (not tanks) probably part of Aufklärungs-Abteilung 20, emerged from the forest trail,  and launched heavy machine gun fire on the Polish units. The Polish cavalrymen were in a clearing and completely exposed to enemy fire and had to race for cover behind a nearby hillock.   About a third of the Polish force was dead or wounded and the Commanders were killed in the attack.  Later on that day,  German war correspondents were brought to the battlefield, accompanied by two Italian journalists, to survey the carnage. They saw the corpses of the Polish cavalrymen and of their horses, and noticed that some German tanks had arrived at the place of battle. Indro Montanelli, one of the Italian journalists sent home a report in which he described the bravery and heroism of Polish soldiers, who "charged German tanks with sabres and lances".  This cavalry charge never happened because during the Battle there were no German tanks used in combat.  This myth was created by and propagated by the German propaganda department. They repeated this falsehood frequently in an effort to damage Poland's relationship with the Allies.  In fact, this myth was still being taught in American schools into the 1990s. (Note:  The Polish brigade were also equipped with anti-tank weapons such as 37 mm Bofors wz.36 antitank guns, which had the capacity to penetrate 26 mm of armour at 600 m at 30 degrees. In 1939, the German Panzer I and Panzer II models were relatively smaller than later models, and were vulnerable to anti-tank guns. I suppose the Italian journalists forget to mention that.)

The Battle of Modlin began.  During the German invasion of Poland, there were countless number of battles between German forces and Polish defenders.  The Battle of Modlin was a six day battle that ended in a German victory.  Modlin Fortress was the headquarters of the Polish Modlin Army, under the command of General Wiktor Thommée. It was used as a defensive citadel for Polish troops launching attacks against the German units.  The Poles were armed with anti-aircraft artillery, shooting down more German planes than at any other battle during the September campaign.  The Modlin army was also defended by an armored train code-named Smierc ("Death").   Despite fierce battle, the Modlin army capitulated on September 29, 1939.  About 24,000 troops laid down arms and were taken as POWs by the Germans.

Germans Bombed town of Frampol.  During the invasion of Poland, the Germans targeted Frampol as a practice run for subsequent bombing missions in Poland.  German fighter pilots were trained on strafing techniques on the people who were trying to flee from the city. About 700 tons of bombs were dropped on the city. Since Frampol was defenceless, the German bombers were able to fly at very low altitude without danger of facing anti-aircraft fire.  Frampol lost 90% of its buildings and 50% of the population. The population of the town was 4,000, 50% of which were killed during the bombing.  The town of Frampol was completely destroyed - only two streets remained unscathed and a few houses on the outskirts of the town.

1944

Soviet Air Drops:  After 44 days after the start of the Warsaw Uprising was launched by the Poles, Soviet aircraft was finally sent to begin dropping supplies to the besieged city. Beginning on the night of September 13-14, until September 27-28, Soviet airplanes dropped a total of 130 tons of supplies.  Initially, the canisters were dropped out of the planes without a parachute, so that they were smashed to pieces when hitting the ground.  The Soviet Air Forces flew 2,535 sorties with small bi-plane Polikarpov Po-2's,delivering a total of 156 50-mm mortars, 505 anti-tank rifles, 1478 sub-machine guns, 520 rifles, 669 carbines, 41 780 hand grenades, 37 216 mortar shells, over 3 mln. cartridges, 131.2 tons of food and 515 kg of medicine. Despite allied assistance, a vast majority of the canisters fell into German hands.

1989

Tadeusz Mazowiecki was Prime Minister of Poland. In his parliamentary speech on September 13, 1989 he introduced his new cabinet, and a government program subject to parliamentary vote. Mazowiecki suffered a dizzy spell which prompted a one-hour break in proceedings. In the subsequent vote, the government program was approved by a landslide vote in favor 402 - 0, with 13 abstentions. In a relatively brief period of time, Mazowiecki's government succeeded in implementing many of his reforms. Mazowiecki completely transformed the political system instituting civil freedoms, a multi-party system, and even the country's emblem and name were changed - from the People's Republic of Poland to the Republic of Poland.  On December  29, 1989, the Polish government made fundamental changes in the Polish Constitution. The preamble was deleted and articles regarding political and economic structures of government were changed completely, and the chapter about trade unions was rewritten, and concept of possession was redefined.

Warsaw Uprising 1944: August 10 - Secret Polish Radio Stations

Polish-controlled area (in red)
The Brigade SS-RONA continues its killing spree in Ochota. Hundreds more fall victim to random shootings. Meanwhile, in City Centre the Germans are attempting to clear an East-West artery but are meeting heavy resistance from Polish insurgents.

Much of the Polish stronghold has steadily been lost to the Germans. In Wola, German offenses escalate however Polish insurgents continue to hold their positions in Okopowa Street, the cemeteries and Stawki Street. Meanwhile insurgents in Powisle have strengthened their positions. German artillery continues to bomb the power station that supplies Warsaw with electricity. There is no report on the degree of damages sustained.

During the afternoon German airplanes flew over Warsaw dropping leaflets all over the city. The message calls on Varsovians to leave the city and promises them accomodations, jobs and medical care but threatens "consequences" to those who do not comply.

During the night British planes flew over Srodmiescie and Mokotow and made successful airdrops of arms and ammunition. For the first time since the Uprising began, Polish troops in Kampinos receive their first airdrop of arms and ammunition.

The BBC announced acknowledged today that they have been receiving broadcasts from Station Lighting for the past few days. The mood among Polish fighters is one of elation. It has provided them with assurance that the outside world has heard them and that allied intervention is very near.

There are 57 secret Polish radio stations spread out all throughout Nazi-occupied Poland. But shortly after the Uprising began over a week ago, numerous stations have lost direct contact with London. A few stations are still on the air including the one under the direction of Stefan Korbonski, Head of the Department of Civil Resistance. He is sharing radio facilities with other Polish stations including the radio station of the Polish Peasant Party. Polish radio is being transmitted in several languages (Polish, English and German), and to several target areas: to the Polish Supreme Commander-in-Chief in London, to Polish base near Bari, Italy,  and to insurgents fighting in Warsaw, and other areas throughout the nation.

There is constant danger that the Germans will discover the location of the secret radio stations. Needless to say it is most dangerous during broadcasts. German planes have increased their reconnaissance activities in an all-out effort to pinpoint the precise locations of these secret Polish radio transmissions.  If  found, Germans troops are under orders to destroy them with heavy artillery fire and bombs.  Many insurgents are acting as look-outs; some have been spotted clinging to rooftops watching the skies, ready to give the alarm as soon as German planes are spotted on the approach.

Polish Underground Radio

Fake Polish Orders (by Germans)
The Germans have set up a shadow radio station operating under the same frequency as that of the Polish station Lightning. They are broadcasting in the Polish language, supplying misinformation and misleading orders from “Polish Command” in an effort to disrupt Polish communications. On the second day of the Uprising, German planes dropped leaflets claiming to be orders from Polish General Bor, urging Polish insurgents to join the German army in its fight against Soviet troops.

Tass, the Soviet news agency is also conducting extensive interference over Polish radio. It is interesting to note that just days before the Warsaw Uprising broke out the Soviet-based Kosciuszko radio station broadcast a rallying cry for all Poles to begin the Uprising. Tadeusz Kosciuzko was one of Poland’s greatest heroes. He was the Supreme Commander of the Polish Armed Forces and led the 1794 Kosciuszko Uprising against Russia and Prussia. Prior to that he was a Colonel in the Continental Army and fought in the American Revolutionary War. For his meritorious service he was given rank of Brigadier General and became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America.

Colonel Mitkiewicz
Colonel Mitkiewicz was in contact with Polish military headquarters in London and complained that he was stonewalled when he had requested the Combined Chiefs of Staff to provide assistance to the insurgents in Warsaw. The CCS asserted that the decision could only be made by British officials in London, but when Mitkiewicz directed his requests there, he was told that Warsaw is within the zone of activity of the Soviet military. As such, it was impossible for London to intervene without the knowledge and approval of Soviet Command.

WARSAW EVACUATED - POLISH GOVERNMENT PREVAILS

September 30, 1939

The evacuation began in Warsaw today of Polish forces to German POW camps. Polish President Ignance Moscicki presently interned in Romania has resigned his post.  A new Polish government in exile has been formed on French soil. Wladyslaw Raczkiewicz has taken a constitutional oath at the Polish Embassy and has become the new President of the Republic of Poland. He has appointed Wladyslaw Sikorski to be Prime Minister and Edward Rydz-Smigly the Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Armed Forces. Despite the German-Soviet occupation of Poland, Britain and France recognize the legitimacy of the newly formed Polish government.

There are presently over 80,000 Polish armed forces stationed in France consisting of army and navy personnel. Many more are arriving every day having escaped Romanian custody. They are not refugees but combatants with the military objective of regrouping their forces to continue fighting for Poland`s freedom. Most arrived by ship, train or car. Many more have made the dangerous passage on foot or skied across the Carpathian mountains.

German reports have been circulating that Polish planes were destroyed on the airfield.  Sources indicate that although a few trainer planes were hit by enemy fire,  the entire Polish fleet had indeed taken to the air when Germany attacked on September 1st. Subsequent reports of Polish Cavalry attacking German tanks with sabers is equally false and a source of German propaganda.  Eyewitness reports indicate that German Cavalry divisions are  mobilizing.

In reaction to Britain's attack on German U-boats, German Supreme Command has notified British Command that armed British ships will be sunk without warning.  In the South Atlantic today off Pernambuco Brazil the German Graf-Spee bombed and sunk it`s first merchant ship, the British steamship Clement, commanded by Captain F. Harris.

The British Parliament has authorized shipments of poison gas to France in the event that Germany begins using chemical weapons.

German Troops Occupy Danzig

September 14, 1939

Gdynia, Poland's only seaport was occupied by German troops.  Its port includes Gdansk and Sopot. Originally a small German fishing, Gdynia was transferred to Poland after World War I. Since then it was developed into an important rail center including industries producing metal and machinery. It has become a leading Baltic port, main naval base and shipbuilding center for Poland.  German authorities have renamed the port Gotenhafen.

German forces attacking from East Prussia have reached open country and crossed the Narew River near Modlin. They have swept around Warsaw to begin the process of encircling the Polish capital. The Polish units under General Zulauf which have just reached Warsaw, have been incorporated as the core of the defence forces of the burough of Praga.

The city of Lwow is now completely cut off by German attacks.  The German 4th Panzer division positioned just outside Warsaw has retreated.  Alerted to a possible threat, General Wladyslaw Bortonowski ordered an immediate retreat of the 26th Infantry division after they had just crossed the Bzura near Lowicz.  The Polish 4th Infantry reached the road linking Lowicz with Glowno while the 16th Infantry crossed the Bzura near Lowicz.

The German 19th Panzer Corp has reached Brest-Litovsk in eastern Poland, where ethnic Ukrainians have begun an uprising in Lwow and Stanislowow, attacking pockets of Polish infantry positioned in the area.

Pravda, the official newspaper of the Russian Community Party, has launched a bitter anti-Polish propaganda campaign with a front-page article deploring the treatment of minorities in Poland.

There was a close call in the North Atlantic today. While on anti-submarine patrol along the northwestern coast of Ireland, the HMS Ark Royal just barely escaped from a U-39 German submarine attack. Moments later the U-boat was bombed by 3 British destroyers accompanying the carrier. Forth-three German crewman were captured before their ship sank.

Despite internal pressure by Hungarian officials to enter the war, the Hungarian government refrained from declaring its neutrality on the grounds that it is not threatened by Hitler.

GERMANS MASSACRE POLES

September 5, 1939

The German 10th and 14th Armies crossed the Vistula River today breaking through the cordon of Polish troops. At Bydgoszcz located in the southern part of the corridor the Polish rear guard and armed civilians gave strong resistance to the Germans but finally yielded to the German 3rd Corps..

Upon entering Bydgoszcz German troops claim to have found hundreds of Germans killed, and accused the Poles for the massacre. The only photograph shows fewer than a dozen bodies laying on the ground. These were Poles of German origin who witnesses say were armed and were shooting at the Polish citizens.  Nevertheless the Germans used this as propaganda to justify mass slayings of ethnic Poles.

The photo bears editors' cropping marks, indicating that it was intended for publication.

Germans arrested and executed hundreds of Poles

German troops swept through a series of towns including the Jewish district of Piotrkow, setting fires as they advanced and massacring hundreds of Polish citizens.  Poland's Supreme Commanders ordered a general retreat behind the Vistula. The town of Sulejow near Warsaw was completely destroyed by German bombing raids.

At Westerplatte fighting continues.German forces have launched several probing attacks to assess Polish strength. Despite continued efforts by the German naval infantry, Danzig SS, and the Wehrmacht were again repelled by Polish fire.  At 0300 hours, the Germans sent a fire-train against the land bridge but failed when the terrified driver decoupled too early. It failed to reach its target and burst into flames igniting the forest around it.  The flames gave Poles the perfect opportunity to pick off their targets one by one. German casualties are very high. Polish Major Sucharski held a council to urge his men to surrender to the Germans. In the afternoon the Germans made a second attempt to use the fire-train but failed again.  Polskie Radio has been transmitting the same message every morning since September 1 - "Westerplatte still fights on!"

This afternoon, Major Sucharski called for yet a second council to discuss surrender to the Germans. Fighting continues. The German Army has reached the city perimeter of Warsaw.  The city is in desperate need of medical supplies. Gangrene had developed among the Polish wounded.

Warsaw's AA Defense is beginning to crumble. Polish Command has ordered the immediate withdrawal of 11 AA military batteries from Warsaw to Lublin, Brzesc, and Lwow.

South Africa: In a surprising change of leadership, the legislature in South Africa named General Jan Christian Smuts as the new Prime Minister replacing pro-German Prime Minister Herzog.  South Africa which is comprised of largely Dutch citizens, are sympathetic to German racial policies.

Washington: In a move that surprised everyone, the United States declared it's neutrality. No officials could be reached for comment.
